Sazan is Albania's largest island, but at around five square kilometres it fits easily on a single sheet at close scale. It lies just off the tip of the Karaburun Peninsula and closes much of the mouth of the Bay of Vlorë. On the map it reads as a plug of rock between the open sea and the sheltered water behind it.
The island is long and hilly, with steep shores on the seaward side and a few small coves facing the bay. There is no town and very little road, so a Sazan Island map poster is mostly coastline and contour. It shows a tight outline set against the broad curve of the Albanian coast and the long mountainous arm of Karaburun.
For much of the twentieth century Sazan was a closed military site. It sits near the Strait of Otranto, the narrow sea gap between Albania and the heel of Italy, and that position gave it strategic value in several periods. Today it is largely abandoned and visited mainly on boat trips from Vlorë. Its waters are part of a protected marine area.

Karaburun Peninsula
The long, rugged peninsula just south of the island forms the other side of the bay's entrance. Framing Sazan with Karaburun shows how closely the island follows the line of the mainland ridge.
Protected waters
The sea around Sazan and Karaburun belongs to Albania's first marine national park. On the map this shows as clean, unbroken water around an almost empty island.
