Scottsdale runs north to south for many miles alongside Phoenix. It is a narrow city shaped by the regular mile-square grid of arterial roads common across the Salt River Valley. Within that framework, curving residential streets, golf courses and resort grounds create softer patterns, and the Arizona Canal crosses the city on a long diagonal.

Mile grid
Major roads are spaced a regular mile apart, dividing Scottsdale into large squares. Curving neighbourhood streets, golf fairways and resort landscapes fill each one.
McDowell Mountains
To the north-east, the streets thin out against the McDowell Mountains and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Here the map becomes largely empty desert terrain.
