Sédhiou is the capital of the Sédhiou Region in southern Senegal, in the Casamance area between The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. The town stands on the Casamance River, and the river dominates the map: a wide channel with soft curves and marshy margins, running along the edge of the town.
The streets form a compact network on higher ground near the water, with roads heading inland through the green, well-watered landscape typical of Casamance. The riverbanks and wetlands appear as broad open spaces that contrast with the finer lines of the town itself.
