Shanwa is a town in the Simiyu Region of northern Tanzania, in the broad farming country south-east of Lake Victoria. The surrounding land is fairly flat and open, and it is used mostly for smallholder agriculture and grazing. The town serves as a local centre for the villages and farms around it.
On a map, Shanwa's core is small and compact, with a handful of streets forming the commercial centre. The pattern loosens quickly towards the edges, where plots, paths and homesteads spread outwards. Main roads cross the open plain in long, gentle lines, and seasonal streams show up as faint threads. The effect is spacious, with plenty of blank ground framing the town.
