Shawei is one of the old urban villages within Shenzhen's Futian district, close to the border river that separates the city from Hong Kong and not far from the shoreline of Shenzhen Bay. From above, it shows a pattern found all over Shenzhen: a patch of extremely narrow lanes and tightly packed buildings surrounded by the broad, planned avenues of the modern city.
Villages like Shawei are older than Shenzhen's rise, which began after it became a special economic zone in 1980. As the city grew around them, their small plots were rebuilt as tall, closely packed apartment buildings, often called handshake buildings. Today they are among the densest residential areas in China.
