Shīnḏanḏ is in Herat province in western Afghanistan, on a broad dry plain ringed by mountains. From above, the town is a compact grouping of streets and walled compounds. Beyond it, open ground stretches away, crossed by a handful of roads and marked by irrigated patches wherever water allows cultivation.
The district is best known for the Shindand air base, one of the largest airfields in the country, which has long given the area strategic weight. The main highway linking Herat with Kandahar also passes through the region, tying the town to the wider road network.
