Shirpur lies in Dhule district in the far north of Maharashtra, close to the Tapi River and within sight of the Satpura range. The plain here is broad and farmed, and on the map the town is a compact older centre with a looser ring of newer development around it.
The main highway between Mumbai and Agra passes nearby, and the town's roads fan out toward it and toward surrounding villages. Seasonal streams run down from the hills, and their shallow courses cross the farmland in soft, branching lines.
Shirpur has become known within India for its watershed and groundwater recharge work, in which local streams were widened and deepened to hold monsoon water. That effort is one reason the town's name comes up in discussions of drought in western India. A Shirpur map poster shows the town together with the channels around it.
