Sholapur, also written Solapur, lies on the Deccan plateau in southern Maharashtra, close to the border with Karnataka. The land is flat and open, and on the map the city appears as a dense, irregular core of old streets with newer districts spreading out along the main roads and rail lines.
Near the centre, the Siddheshwar temple stands on an island in a lake, one of the clearest shapes in the city. Close by is the Bhuikot Fort, whose walls and moat form a compact outline. The city is also an important rail junction, and several lines cross the urban area in long, straight paths.
