The gridded centre
The old town is a tight rectangle of straight streets that cross at right angles. It was planned in one step and still stands out clearly within the newer districts.

Sidi Bel Abbes Map Poster & Print
Sidi Bel Abbes has one of the most legible plans in western Algeria. The town was founded in the mid-nineteenth century as a military post beside the Mekerra river. It was built as a rectangular grid enclosed by walls with gates on its main axes. The walls have mostly gone, but the orderly centre is still easy to read from above.
For more than a century the city was the home base of the French Foreign Legion, which left in 1962. Today it is a university and regional centre. Newer districts have grown well beyond the old boundary and spread across the surrounding farmland. The city is also known as one of the birthplaces of raï music.
A Sidi Bel Abbes map poster brings out the contrast between the compact grid at the centre and the looser growth around it. The river winds past the old core, and main roads run straight out to the plain. The result is a clear, almost diagrammatic composition.

Oued Mekerra
The Mekerra river winds along the edge of the historic core. Its curves soften the rigid geometry and give the map a natural line.
Radiating roads
Main routes leave the centre along straight axes and run out across the surrounding plain. They connect the city to Oran, Tlemcen and the interior.
