Siverek is a district town in Şanlıurfa province, on the volcanic uplands between the Euphrates valley and the Karacadağ massif. From above, the town is a compact, fairly round cluster of streets set in wide open country. The older centre has narrow, irregular lanes. Around it, newer quarters are laid out in more regular blocks along the main roads.
The land here is shaped by old lava flows from Karacadağ, a broad shield volcano to the east. Dark basalt is common in the fields and in local stone buildings, which gives the area its well-known look. On a map, the countryside is crossed by long straight roads and field boundaries instead of rivers or forests.
