Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval lies at the head of the Giffre valley in Haute-Savoie, and its map ends in one of the most distinctive shapes in the French Alps. East of the village, the valley closes in a great semicircle of cliffs, the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval. In spring and early summer, waterfalls spill down its walls.
The village grew up around a medieval abbey, and today much of the commune lies within a large nature reserve. In winter, the lifts of Sixt connect with the Grand Massif ski area. The high valleys belong to walkers, climbers and wildlife.

The river rises in the high ground and runs past the village toward Samoëns. It is a single line that collects the streams falling from the cirque.
Nature reserve
Much of the commune lies within a protected reserve, so most of the map has no roads or buildings. It stays a large, quiet expanse beyond the village.
