Somerton is a city in Yuma County, Arizona, near the borders with Mexico and California. From above, it is a neat grid of streets set among rectangular agricultural fields, with irrigation canals and farm roads cutting across the flat desert land that the nearby Colorado River has made productive.
Agriculture shapes Somerton. The Yuma area is one of the country's major winter vegetable-growing regions, and many residents work in the fields that surround the town. Its population is largely Hispanic, and it has close ties to communities just across the border.
