Songlingcun lies in northeastern Hebei, in hilly country well to the east of Beijing. From above, the settlement's shape follows the terrain: roads run through the valleys, and houses cluster on the flatter ground between the slopes.
The name ends in cun, which means village, a reminder that many places in this part of China grew from rural communities. The surrounding hills limit where streets can go. This gives the settlement a stretched, irregular outline rather than a grid.
