Spinaceto is a residential district on the southern edge of Rome, built as a planned public housing scheme from the 1960s onward. On a map it looks very different from the older city. Long, continuous apartment buildings are arranged along a central spine road, with green spaces between them and open countryside around the edges. Main roads connect it back toward EUR and the centre.
The district became widely known through Nanni Moretti's film Caro diario, in which the director rides his Vespa through its streets and reflects on the neighbourhood. The scene made Spinaceto something of a reference point in discussions of Rome's modern suburbs and planned districts.
