China clay country
North of the town, large pits, lakes and spoil heaps form irregular shapes across the land. They are the legacy of more than two centuries of kaolin extraction.

St Austell Map Poster & Print
St Austell lies in mid-Cornwall, a short distance inland from St Austell Bay. From above, the town spreads over hills and valleys. Streets twist around a historic centre with a granite church, and suburbs climb the slopes. To the north, the map is marked by the huge pits, lakes and spoil heaps of the china clay industry.
China clay, or kaolin, was discovered nearby in the eighteenth century and made St Austell one of the most important mining centres in Britain. Its white tips were nicknamed the Cornish Alps. One exhausted pit was transformed into the Eden Project, whose linked biomes are now among Cornwall's best-known sights. On the coast, the Georgian port of Charlestown was built to ship the clay.
A St Austell map poster is richly textured. There are curving hill roads, the tight old town, the irregular shapes of the clay workings and the smooth arc of the bay. It is one of the most varied compositions in Cornwall and rewards a large print size.

Eden Project
Set in a former clay pit near St Austell, the Eden Project's cluster of biomes sits in a deep bowl. It is a distinctive shape among the surrounding hills.
Charlestown harbour
On St Austell Bay, the small Georgian harbour of Charlestown has an enclosed dock that is clear on the map. It was built for shipping clay.

St Austell draws people with Cornish family roots, those who have holidayed along the bay, and anyone interested in industrial landscapes. Its mix of coast, town and clay country makes an unusual print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates with a family name, a holiday year or an address, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir makes the pale clay country read strongly.
