Sur Map Poster
Sur lies on Oman's eastern coast, where the Arabian Sea turns toward the Gulf of Oman. Its defining feature on the map is a narrow tidal inlet that cuts into the land and splits the town into two parts: the main districts on one bank and the older fishing quarter of Al Ayjah on the other, joined by a bridge. The water's outline gives the whole town its shape.
For centuries Sur was a seafaring town, and it is still known for building wooden dhows by hand along the lagoon shore. Lighthouses mark the mouth of the inlet, and low whitewashed houses fill the land between the water and the rocky hills behind. Further along the coast, the nesting beaches at Ras al Jinz draw visitors who come to see green turtles.

A single bridge spans the inlet and links the main town with Al Ayjah, the older quarter on the far side, known for its lighthouse and traditional houses.
Dhow yards
The shipbuilding yards along the lagoon shore, where wooden dhows are still made, sit right at the water's edge where the street grid meets the inlet.
