Tando Muhammad Khan lies in southern Sindh, south of Hyderabad, in the flat, irrigated country of the lower Indus plain. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets surrounded by fields, and the surrounding land is divided by canals and water channels. Roads run out from the centre toward neighbouring towns, following the lines of the irrigation system.
The town is the headquarters of the district of the same name and serves as a market centre for the farming villages around it. Agriculture dominates the area, with irrigation drawn from the Indus canal network supporting crops such as sugarcane and cotton.
