Thākurgaon is the headquarters of a district in the far northwest of Bangladesh, close to the border with India. The land here is almost perfectly flat, farmed alluvial plain, and on the map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets with a river running along it. Roads fan out from the centre across the fields toward neighbouring towns.
As a district town it has the usual administrative buildings, markets and schools gathered near the centre, with residential lanes spreading out from there.
