Timişoara grew from a fortified town on the Banat plain in western Romania. The fortress walls were removed long ago, but their outline still shapes the map: a dense historic core, surrounded by broad boulevards and parks laid out where bastions and glacis once stood. Beyond this ring, districts such as Fabric, Iosefin and Elisabetin spread outward in their own regular patterns.
The Bega Canal runs through the city in a smooth, gentle curve, lined with parks and crossed by a series of bridges. Inside the old centre, the map opens into several squares, including Piața Unirii with its baroque cathedral and Piața Victoriei, a long plaza that ends at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
Timişoara was among the first European cities to light its streets with electricity, in 1884, and it was where the Romanian Revolution of 1989 began. It was a European Capital of Culture in 2023. A Timişoara map poster shows the careful Habsburg planning that still gives the city its order.
