Tivoli sits on the slopes of the Tiburtine hills east of Rome, where the Aniene river leaves the mountains and falls toward the plain. From above, the old town is a tight tangle of lanes on a spur of rock, wrapped by a deep bend of the river. Roads zigzag down the hillside toward the flat Campagna and the capital beyond.
Known to the Romans as Tibur, the town was a summer retreat for the elite. Hadrian's Villa lies on the plain below, and Villa d'Este, with its Renaissance fountains and terraced gardens, is in the historic centre. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The circular Temple of Vesta stands above the gorge where the Villa Gregoriana park frames the waterfalls.
