Castle hill park
The hill above the centre, once the site of the castle, is now a park, and its winding paths and slopes make a distinct green shape beside the dense old town.

Tortona Map Poster & Print
Tortona lies in southeastern Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, where the Scrivia valley opens onto the Po plain. The town was the Roman Dertona, and parts of its centre still follow the ancient layout. Above it rises a hill that once carried the castle, now a public park.
The historic centre is compact, with the cathedral and main squares close together and streets running in a regular pattern. Outside it, later neighbourhoods spread across the plain toward the river and the railway. Tortona is also closely tied to cyclist Fausto Coppi, born nearby, who died in the town in 1960.
A Tortona map poster reads well because of that layering: the tight Roman-era core, the green hill on one side, the river and railway tracing lines across the plain. It shows an old crossroads town between Genoa, Milan and Turin, still defined by its ancient setting.

Roman street plan
The centre descends from Roman Dertona, and its more regular streets and compact squares contrast with the looser neighbourhoods built later on the plain.
Scrivia and rail lines
The Scrivia River and the railway lines cross the plain near town, adding long lines that link Tortona to Genoa, Milan and the rest of Piedmont.

Tortona has a loyal following among cycling fans, wine lovers from the nearby Colli Tortonesi and people who grew up beneath its hill. A map of its centre is a subtle, well-grounded choice for any of them.
