City walls
Long sections of medieval fortifications still enclose the old town, giving its oval outline a sharp, well-defined edge on the map.

Trnava Map Poster & Print
Trnava lies on the fertile plain of western Slovakia, northeast of Bratislava, and its old town is one of the clearest shapes on any Central European map. The historic centre forms a compact oval enclosed by long stretches of medieval walls, among the best preserved in the country, with ring roads and parks tracing the line of the former moat.
The town is called the Slovak Rome for the number of its churches, and their spires rise across the old centre. From the seventeenth century Trnava was an important seat of the Church in Hungary, and its university, founded in 1635, was among the most significant in the region. The town tower on the main square is its best-known landmark.
A Trnava map poster shows the old core sharply against the newer districts around it, with housing estates, industrial areas and the car plant on the outskirts, where modern Trnava works. The contrast between the walled oval and the open plain around it is what makes the map so legible.

Main square
The town tower stands on the central square, where the old streets converge. It is the natural focal point of the historic core.
Ring of parks
Green belts and roads follow the line of the old defences, circling the centre and separating it from the later districts.

Trnava is a university town, a church town and an industrial centre at once, and people hang it for all those reasons. The walled oval makes a striking image, whether you studied there or grew up beyond the ring road.
