Ts’khinvali lies on the Great Liakhvi River in the South Caucasus, north of the Georgian lowland of Shida Kartli and below the ridges of the Greater Caucasus. On a map the river runs through the city from north to south, and the streets spread out along both banks on the valley floor, with hills rising at the edges.
