Vattiyūrkāvu lies on the northern side of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital, and forms part of the city's growing residential belt. The map does not show a planned grid. Instead there is a web of curving lanes that follow the rise and fall of low laterite hills, with houses set among thick greenery.
Like much of southern Kerala, the area is built at low density. Gardens, groves and paddy land sit between neighbourhoods, and small ponds and temple tanks appear as neat shapes among the streets. The main roads run toward the city centre and link the suburb to the rest of the capital.
