Watari lies on the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture, a short distance south of Sendai. The Abukuma River reaches the sea at its northern edge. From above, the town has three clear bands: a long, straight coastline, a flat coastal plain of farmland and settlements, and wooded hills along the western side.
The coastal plain was heavily damaged by the 2011 tsunami, and the rebuilt landscape shows new embankments, relocated neighbourhoods and restored farmland. Watari is well known for its strawberry farms and for hokkigai, the surf clams served over rice as a local speciality.
