Waxahachie is the seat of Ellis County in north Texas, about thirty miles south of Dallas along Interstate 35E. The town is known for the Ellis County Courthouse, a red sandstone and granite building completed in 1897, and for its many Victorian houses, which have earned it the nickname Gingerbread City.
On the map, the courthouse square anchors a grid of historic streets, with residential neighbourhoods and commercial corridors spreading outward. Waxahachie Creek winds through the area, and newer subdivisions and highways extend into the surrounding blackland prairie.
A Waxahachie map poster shows the balance between the historic grid and the growing suburban edge. The town was also chosen in the late 1980s as the site of the Superconducting Super Collider, a project cancelled in 1993.
