River mouth
The Whakatāne River bends across the flats before it meets the sea at a narrow entrance. On the poster its curves and the water's edge form a strong line that anchors one side of the town.

Whakatane Map Poster & Print
Whakatane sits at the mouth of the Whakatāne River on the eastern Bay of Plenty, and the map makes its setting unusually clear. The town fills a narrow flat between the river and a line of steep bluffs, so its streets run long and parallel instead of spreading in every direction. Past the river mouth the coastline opens into the bay, drawn as a clean edge of water.
Moutohorā, also known as Whale Island, lies a short distance offshore, and farther out is Whakaari, the active volcano known as White Island. By local tradition the town's name comes from Wairaka, who is said to have saved the Mātaatua canoe from drifting out to sea. A statue of her stands on a rock near the river entrance.
A Whakatane map poster works well because the geography does most of the design. The winding river, the hard line of the escarpment and the curve of the shore give the layout strong contrast. The residential streets fill the space between them with a fine, even texture. Whakatane is a small town, but its plan is as clear as that of a much larger coastal city.

Escarpment behind town
A steep ridge rises right behind the town centre and cuts the street grid off abruptly. On the map it shows as a sharp boundary where dense blocks give way to open ground and winding roads up the hill.
Moutohorā offshore
Whale Island sits in the bay a short distance from the coast. Depending on the framing, its outline can appear as a single shape in the water, balancing the close-set streets on land.

A map of Whakatane often goes to someone who grew up on this stretch of coast, spent summers on the beaches of the eastern Bay of Plenty, or has family in the town. With the river, the ridge and the sea all in view, anyone who knows the place will recognise it at once.
You can set the title, add a subtitle such as a date or a name, and edit the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint and Noir suit the water especially well. HD files cost $9, or you can order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
