Yeongju Map Poster & Print
Yeongju lies in the north of Gyeongsangbuk-do, near the Sobaek mountains. The city centre sits on a valley floor where streams come together. Its dense core of blocks is pressed between hills, and main roads and the railway follow the valleys. Beyond the centre, the map quickly becomes farmland, orchards and forested slopes, with small villages set in the folds of the land.
The Yeongju area has two of Korea's most important heritage sites. Buseoksa Temple, on a mountainside, has one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the country. Sosu Seowon is regarded as Korea's first Confucian academy. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city is also an entry point to Sobaeksan National Park, whose ridges rise to the north.
A Yeongju map poster shows how firmly the landscape shapes the city. The urban area follows the flat land along the streams, and streets stop where the hills begin. Roads reach out along narrow valleys toward temples and villages. In black and white, the contrast between the compact centre and the open terrain gives the design a strong sense of place.

Temple on the slope
Buseoksa sits on terraces cut into a mountainside, reached by a road that winds up from the valley, a Korean heritage site of the first rank.
Sobaek mountain ridges
To the north, the Sobaek range rises into a national park, and the map's street network thins to a few roads following the valleys.
