Yingli lies in northern Shandong, on the very flat land near the Yellow River delta, not far from the city of Dongying. From above, it follows the planned layout common in this part of China: wide, straight roads meet at right angles, large blocks hold residential compounds and public buildings, and fields and canals extend beyond the edges.
The land here is young in geological terms, built up over centuries by silt carried down by the Yellow River. It is low, level and crossed by drainage channels, and the region's development has been closely tied to farming and, more recently, to the oil industry around Dongying. The town itself is small and has few landmarks known outside the area.
