Yukon lies in Canadian County, just west of Oklahoma City. Its map is shaped by the survey grid that divides the Great Plains into square-mile sections. Arterial roads run exactly north–south and east–west one mile apart, and neighbourhoods fill the squares between them. The older downtown sits near the rail line, where the streets are shorter and closer together.
Main Street carries the historic path of Route 66 through town, and the railway crosses the grid and marks the original centre. Newer subdivisions add curving streets and cul-de-sacs within the mile squares, so the map combines rigid arterials with softer internal patterns. Creeks and green belts run across this structure at an angle, following the drainage of the land.
Yukon is known for the Yukon's Best Flour mill and its tall painted sign, a landmark beside the tracks, and as the hometown of country singer Garth Brooks.
