Zhangjiagang is a county-level city within Suzhou, set on the low, water-laced plain of southern Jiangsu. Its northern edge follows the Yangtze, which is wide here and carries a steady stream of shipping toward Shanghai. On a map the riverbank is the dominant line, a long curve of docks, embankments and industrial land that frames everything to the south.
Inland the ground is almost perfectly flat, and the city has been laid out accordingly. The central district is a tidy arrangement of broad roads crossing at right angles, with large blocks of housing, parks and civic buildings in between. Threaded through this grid are the canals and drainage channels typical of the delta, which appear as thin lines running against or alongside the streets.
