The Dender
The river runs through the town in a series of soft curves. It gives the whole map a natural spine, and the historic centre sits along its bank.

Aalst Map Poster & Print
Aalst grew up on the river Dender, which curves through the town from south to north. It is one of the defining lines on the map. The medieval core sits beside it, with the Grote Markt at the centre and narrow streets reaching out in all directions. Beyond that, nineteenth- and twentieth-century neighbourhoods, railway lines and ring roads fill the space between the town and its villages.
On the Grote Markt stands the old aldermen's house, whose belfry is part of the UNESCO-listed belfries of Belgium and France. A statue nearby honours Dirk Martens, who ran one of the earliest printing presses in the Low Countries here in the fifteenth century. Aalst is also widely known for its carnival, a long-standing and often satirical street festival.
An Aalst map poster frames the town's historic centre around the gentle bends of the Dender. It shows a layout that has changed slowly over many centuries. It suits anyone who has lived here, took part in the carnival, or simply knows the town as a stop between Brussels and Ghent.

Grote Markt
The central market square, with its belfry and old civic buildings, is the point where the medieval street pattern gathers most densely.
Rail and ring roads
Railway lines and outer roads circle and cut through the later districts. They mark the town's growth beyond its medieval core.

Aalst is a place people stay attached to, through carnival years, school days or family history. A map of its streets and river is a subtle way to show that attachment, one that suits both traditional and modern interiors.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to edit, for a carnival year, a wedding date or a street name. Pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
