Bad Bentheim lies in the far west of Lower Saxony, just across the border from the Netherlands. The town is dominated by Bentheim Castle, which sits on a sandstone ridge rising above the surrounding flat country. On a map, the old town wraps around the foot of the castle hill, while newer districts spread out over the lower land.
The ridge itself is the source of Bentheim sandstone, which was quarried for centuries and shipped widely, especially to the Netherlands, where it was used in many important buildings. Today the town is also a spa resort with thermal baths, and forest and parkland around the ridge soften the edges of the built-up area.

The ridge was quarried for the well-known Bentheim sandstone, and traces of that landscape remain in the wooded areas around the town.
Border country
Beyond the town, the flat farmland of the German-Dutch border stretches out, crossed by the railway and roads leading toward the Netherlands.
