Bail-Hongal lies in Belagavi district in northern Karnataka, in a broad farming landscape of black-soil fields. On a map, the town is compact: a dense centre of lanes and markets, surrounded by more open residential streets, with roads leaving in several directions toward neighbouring towns and villages. Beyond the edge, the land is almost entirely farmland.
The town is closely associated with Kittur Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur who led an armed resistance against the East India Company in 1824. She was held at Bail-Hongal fort and died there in 1829, and her memorial stands in the town. A Bail-Hongal map poster places that history within the everyday street pattern of a working market town.

Radiating roads
Roads leave the town toward Belagavi, Kittur and the surrounding villages. Their long, straight lines reach out from the centre and give the map a star-like structure.
