Bankra lies in Howrah district in West Bengal, on the western side of the Hooghly River and within the wider urban sprawl of Kolkata and Howrah. On a map it appears as a dense, continuous fabric of narrow lanes, with few open gaps and no clear edge where one neighbourhood ends and the next begins.
The pattern is typical of the lower Bengal plain. Small ponds and water tanks are scattered through the built-up area, and the streets bend around them.
