Hills rise around and within the city, leaving large empty shapes on the map that the streets curve around rather than cross.

Blantyre Map Poster & Print
Blantyre sits in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi, and the map makes the terrain obvious. Hills including Ndirande, Soche and Michiru rise around the city, and roads curve between them rather than forming a grid. The urban area stretches along the valleys toward Limbe, with which Blantyre forms a single city.
Founded as a Church of Scotland mission in the 1870s, the city takes its name from the Scottish town where David Livingstone was born. The mission's Church of St Michael and All Angels, built by missionaries from locally made bricks, is still one of its best-known buildings. Today Blantyre is Malawi's main commercial centre.
A Blantyre map poster traces how the city fits into its landscape: streets bending along slopes, open spaces where hills are too steep to build, and the long connection between the centre and Limbe. The map has a natural, flowing quality, very different from the regular grids of many capitals.

Blantyre to Limbe
The urban area runs between the two historic centres, joined by main roads along the valley, forming one elongated city shape.
Winding roads
Streets follow the contours of the highland terrain, giving the map loops and curves instead of straight avenues.
