Deesa lies in Banaskantha district in northern Gujarat, on the bank of the Banas river. For much of the year the river is a broad, sandy channel rather than a full stream, and on a map it appears as a wide pale band beside the town, crossed by road and rail bridges. The land around is flat and open, divided into farm plots.
The town grew as a trading and agricultural centre, and under British rule it was also the site of a military cantonment, whose more regular layout differs from the denser, older streets of the market area. Roads fan out toward Palanpur, Radhanpur and the Rajasthan border, making Deesa a junction for much of the surrounding region.
Deesa is best known today as one of India's leading potato-growing areas, and cold storage warehouses are a familiar sight around the town.
