Pālanpur is the headquarters of Banaskantha district in northern Gujarat and was once the capital of a princely state ruled by the Lohani nawabs. On a map the older town is a dense core of lanes, while newer residential areas and wide roads extend outward across flat ground. To the north-east, the land begins to rise toward the Aravalli hills.
The town lies on the main railway between Ahmedabad and Delhi, and the track and its yards make a strong straight line through the map. Pālanpur is also known far beyond Gujarat as the home region of the Palanpuri Jain families who became prominent in the diamond trade in Mumbai and Antwerp.
