Göttingen lies in the Leine valley in southern Lower Saxony. From above, its compact medieval centre is clearly visible. It is enclosed by the line of the old ramparts, the Wall, which is now a tree-lined walk that can be followed almost all the way around. The Leine Canal runs along the western side, and the river itself flows a little further out.
The Georg August University, founded in 1737, has shaped the town ever since. Its buildings are spread through the centre, and its large northern campus sits beyond. More than forty Nobel laureates have been linked to Göttingen. In front of the old town hall, the Gänseliesel fountain is the figure that new doctoral graduates traditionally kiss.

Leine and canal
The Leine Canal runs along the western edge of the centre, and the river runs through the valley beyond. Together they give the map two parallel lines of water.
