Hebburn lies in South Tyneside, on the south bank of the River Tyne between Jarrow and Gateshead. The river curves along its northern edge, and the riverside land that once held shipyards and industrial works shows on the map as large, open plots beside the water.
Behind the river, the town is made up of residential streets: older terraces laid out in straight rows, and postwar estates with curving roads and crescents.
