Hillegom lies in the Bollenstreek, the flower-bulb district of South Holland between Haarlem and Leiden. It is the sandy strip behind the dunes where tulips, hyacinths and daffodils have been grown commercially for generations. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets surrounded by the long, thin rectangles of bulb fields, each one edged by a drainage ditch.
On its eastern side, Hillegom meets the Ringvaart, the broad canal dug around the Haarlemmermeer when that lake was drained in the nineteenth century. The canal gives the map a clean, curving boundary. Across it, the rigid polder grid of the Haarlemmermeer starts at a completely different scale.
A Hillegom map poster captures that meeting of two Dutch landscapes: the older, organic streets of a bulb-country village and the engineered straight lines of reclaimed land. In black and white the ditches, canals and field strips look almost like a woodcut. There are fine parallel lines everywhere, broken only by the denser knot of the town centre.

Around the town, narrow fields separated by ditches create a dense pattern of parallel lines. It is the typical mark of the Bollenstreek seen from above.
Compact centre
The built-up core is small and closely knit. Its winding older streets and newer residential loops contrast clearly with the straight lines of the surrounding land.
