Kahramanmaraş lies in southern Turkey, where the foothills of the Taurus meet a broad plain opening to the south. Ahır Mountain rises steeply to the north, and the city spreads out from its lower slopes. On the map the street pattern changes with the terrain, from tight, irregular lanes near the old centre to wide, regular boulevards on the level ground below.
At the heart of the old city stands a castle on a hill, surrounded by the Ulu Cami and older neighbourhoods. The main avenues lead away from this core toward newer districts on the plain. The city was among those most severely affected by the 2023 earthquakes, and rebuilding has since changed parts of the map, with new housing areas appearing on its edges.
The city is famous for Maraş dondurma, a dense, stretchy ice cream made with salep and goat's milk. The title Kahraman, meaning heroic, was added to its name in recognition of the local resistance of 1920.
