Kātpādi lies just north of Vellore in Tamil Nadu, across the broad and often sandy bed of the Palar river. It is best known for two things: its railway junction, one of the main stops for Vellore on the Chennai–Bengaluru line, and the Vellore Institute of Technology, whose large campus is on the edge of town. Both are clearly visible on the map.
The railway lines are the strongest feature. They cut through the town in long, gentle curves and divide residential areas into distinct blocks. The streets between them are mostly regular, with the planned layout of later suburbs. The university grounds form a large, clearly bounded area with their own internal roads, while the river valley to the south separates Kātpādi from Vellore proper.

The VIT grounds form a large, self-contained block with their own road network. Former students can easily trace the routes between hostels, lecture halls and the gate.
Palar riverbed
South of the town, the wide bed of the Palar separates Kātpādi from Vellore. On paper it appears as a broad, open band that frames the lower edge of the composition.
