The walled city
The old centre has an intricate, compact texture of compounds and lanes. It stands apart clearly from the more open planned districts that grew around it.

Katsina Map Poster & Print
Katsina is one of the historic Hausa city-states of northern Nigeria and lies close to the border with Niger. For centuries it was a major stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. The old city was enclosed by earthen walls, and its gates still give their names to the roads that leave the centre.
On the map the old city appears as a dense, irregular web of lanes and compounds, the pattern of houses built around courtyards. At its heart is the Emir's palace, and nearby stands the Gobarau Minaret, a tall mud-brick tower often dated to the fifteenth century. Beyond the old walls the newer city spreads out in more regular blocks and wider roads.
The land around Katsina is flat and semi-arid, so there are no rivers or hills to organise the plan. A Katsina map poster shows a city defined by its own history: a walled core, gates facing outward, and the open plain beyond.

Gates and roads
Main routes leave the historic core where the old city gates stood. They form a loose radial pattern pointing across the plain to neighbouring towns.
Palace and minaret
The Emir's palace and the Gobarau Minaret sit at the historic centre. They are the fixed points around which Katsina's religious and civic life developed.
