Sokoto lies in the far northwest of Nigeria, close to where the Sokoto and Rima rivers meet, on flat, dry land at the southern edge of the Sahel. In the early nineteenth century Sokoto became the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, founded after the movement led by Usman dan Fodio, which grew into one of the largest states in West Africa.
