Kesabpur is an upazila town in Jessore district, in the Khulna Division of south-western Bangladesh. Like many towns of the Ganges delta, it looks on the map like a web of narrow lanes and paths laid over flat, wet ground, with ponds in almost every neighbourhood. River channels wind nearby, and fields stretch out in all directions past the edge of town.
The upazila includes Sagardari, birthplace of the nineteenth-century poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt. His family home beside the Kopotakkho river is now a museum and hosts an annual fair. The low land around Kesabpur also suffers from waterlogging, a reminder of how closely life here depends on water levels and drainage.
