Kunnamangalam lies east of Kozhikode in northern Kerala, on the road that climbs from the coast towards Wayanad. The land here is hilly, with low laterite ridges, paddy valleys and patches of coconut and areca plantation. On a map, the town centre forms around the main road, and smaller streets wind off in many directions, following the slopes.
The area is known for its institutions. The campus of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode sits on a hilltop in Kunnamangalam, and the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management is also located here. The National Institute of Technology Calicut lies nearby, giving this part of Kozhikode district a strong academic character.
