Madurāntakam lies in northern Tamil Nadu, south of Chennai on the main highway toward Tiruchirappalli. On a map, its defining feature is not a street but water. A very large irrigation tank spreads beside the town, held back by a long earthen bund. Houses, temples and market lanes gather on the dry ground next to it, and the highway and railway pass by in long parallel strokes.
The lake is one of the largest tanks in the state and has fed the surrounding paddy fields for centuries. Local tradition links it to the Eri Katha Ramar temple, whose name means the Rama who guarded the lake. The story recalls the embankment surviving a severe flood. The bird sanctuary at Vedanthangal lies a short distance away, part of the same landscape of tanks and wetlands.
A Madurāntakam map poster shows this relationship clearly. A broad, pale sheet of water lies on one side and a finely detailed town on the other, with field boundaries fading into the plain around them. It is an unusual composition for a town map, more about the balance between settlement and reservoir than about a dense centre. It reads well even at smaller print sizes.

The embankment line
A long bund holds the water in place. It draws a firm edge between reservoir and town and gives the whole composition its structure.
Highway and railway
The main highway south from Chennai and the parallel railway pass close to the town. Their long, nearly straight lines frame the older lanes between them.
