Mengzi sits in a basin in southern Yunnan, on flat land ringed by hills. On a map the older centre gathers around Nanhu, a lake that gives the town a calm focal point. From there the streets spread outward onto the plain, and the newer administrative districts show as a looser grid of broad roads with larger blocks and more open space between them.
The city is the seat of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. In the late nineteenth century it became a customs town on trade routes toward Vietnam, and the Yunnan–Vietnam railway later passed nearby. Mengzi is also widely associated with crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, a Yunnan dish whose origin story is told here.
