Mifune lies southeast of Kumamoto city, where the plain around the city starts to rise into hills. The town is known across Japan for dinosaur fossils. Rock layers in the area have produced numerous fossil finds, and the Mifune Dinosaur Museum displays many of them. The subject has become part of the town's identity, and it shows up in local signs and public art.
